Dr. Kao’s professional goal is to offer the best available treatments to her patients in a customized way that accomplishes her patients’ goals of care.  She strives to be a compassionate and kind partner to her patients, and tries to share her knowledge and experience in a way that is easy to understand. She finds it a privilege to become a partner with her patients in building a path towards hope and healing while living with cancer.

Dr Kao moved to United States from Serbia when she was 17 years old. She graduated from U.C. Davis with honors in Biochemistry, and completed her MD degree at Stanford University School of Medicine.  She continued at Stanford Hospitals and Clinics for her internship and residency in Internal Medicine, and her fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology.  During her time at Stanford, Dr. Kao worked to understand the basic science of cancer, working on blood samples from pediatric leukemia patients. She also worked to develop phase I and II clinical trials in the area of malignant Hematology.  Her areas of special interest are benign and malignant hematological disorders and lymphoma. She loves to investigate the causes of different bleeding and clotting disorders, and remains fascinated by the fact that looking at a patients’ blood and bone marrow samples under the microscope can explain the cause of blood count abnormalities. She is an active member of the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Dr Kao is married and has two children. Her husband is a physician as well. Her time outside work is consumed by trying to be the best Mom possible. She is an active participant in the local Mother’s club and volunteer in her children’s schools. She enjoys running, hiking, camping and biking with her family.
