curriculum vitae.

Dr. Ekstrand sees patients at California Cancer Care with a single goal in mind: to provide outstanding patient care. He accomplishes this by combining a scientist’s perspective on the latest in cancer biology with a healer’s ability to care for the whole patient and not just treat the disease. While Dr. Ekstrand sees a wide variety of patients with cancer, he has particular interests in treating patients with genitourinary malignancies and lymphomas.

He earned his M.D. as well as a Ph.D. (studying cancer biology) from Yale University School of Medicine. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from Stanford University, where he earned Phi Beta Kappa honors. Dr. Ekstrand attended Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York for his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine. For his Fellowship in Medical Oncology he trained at Stanford University School of Medicine.  He has co-authored numerous scientific publications within the field of molecular biology and medical oncology.  He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.

Dr. Ekstrand has ongoing experience in Phase I, II, III, and IV Clinical Pharmaceutical Trials as a Principal and/or Sub Investigator. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of Northern California Oncologists.

Born in Boulder, Colorado, Dr. Ekstrand enjoys the outdoors, particularly alpine skiing and long-distance running. Now, with his wife and three children, he devotes most time away from the office to family activities. He also is an avid sports fan and closely follows Stanford Athletics.
